INTERACTIVE MGMT VIDEO

MGMT has released a new video for 'Electric Feel.' In December they released an interactive video for the same song that lets you adjust colors and backgrounds! You can go here to download it.

Kanye West-Flashing Lights Video-Vers 3

Kanye "Never content with just 1 Video" West has released his third version of a music video for "Flashing Lights." I really like this version, but I still prefer the first one with the scantly clad model beating Kanye with a shovel! Yikes! Let us know what version you like!

GO SEE MUJA MESSIAH TONIGHT

At the Dinkytowner. Good show it will be.

In the meanwhile, I found this video on YouTube this afternoon. Been listening to Neutral Milk Hotel all day. It must be the rain.

Stephen Merritt on My Fox Atlanta

Probably one of my favorite interviews on you tube right now. Stephen Merritt is my hero.

If you don't believe in his genius, click here.

"As You Turn To Go." My favorite love song of all time - from The 6th's album Hyacinths and Thistles.

Birthday Suits: May 23, 2008

When Birthday Suits took the stage in First Avenue's 7th Street Entry, I wondered, "Wow, what the fuck are they so mad at?" I quickly realized their foes were bordem, complacency. Just see the clairvoyant "Twin City Bridge is Falling Down" -- which was written pre-35W collapse!!!

Cherry Blue, the 16-minute-33-second-long scorcher of an album, unveils a barrage of staccato, nose-thumbing, kick-a-hole-in-the-sky spaz punk.

Two-fifths of defunct raucous ethnic punk outfit Sweet Jap reference influences from Minor Threat to The Mothers of Invention to Weird Al Yankovich and have found a new amalgam of music I find best coined as “tardcore.”

Guitarist Hideo Takashi and Drummer Matthew Kazama share vocals – at times in doo-wop fashion – in a lispy Asian accent so real and expressive that it may at first seem intentional and laughable. Not that they give the tiniest #&*$ what you think.

They keep it real as Hennepin and 7th Street after bar close live and on the album, and fill a stage so full of life force -- the likes of which I have not seen since the Stooges played Grant Park.

10000 Beats filmed the entire show. Lots of footage coming soon...

Heavy Metal Parking Lot

Classic. I realize we should have done something like this for Sound Set. It would have been amazing. Next year...

Photos / video from Sound Set 08

We should have more clips soon - but in the meanwhile, here is an Atmosphere snippet from Sunday's Sound Set:

And some pics we took of Muja Messiah, Doomtree, & Atmosphere:

Sound Set 2008

My sister sat me down on Monday and gave me a lecture about how I need to start dating nice guys. I know I should, but I have found nice guys in the past, well, a little boring. "You have a problem," she told me.

I found myself at Sound Set on Sunday, feeling the same way about Minneapolis hip hop as I do nice guys. I know I should like it - I really know I should like it, but our local genre’s expressive feelings irritate me. It is super uncool of me, but I just don't want a man to be sensitive in hip hop.

It's the bravado, theatrics, confidence and swagger I love most about rap, and I suppose its glimmer of danger. My sister will tell you the qualities I find myself attracted to in men are the same, and start exciting and end destructively. What I haven’t wrapped my head around yet, is why misogyny and violence are integral to my favorite songs and why –aholic has become such a familiar suffix. I do have a problem.

Her advice was to practice dating nice guys, by going out with nice guys - that perhaps through the act of getting to know them, I'll find someone who likes himself, has a job, calls his mother (not too much, just enough), and is fun to hang around with. "Ok," I promised her, "I'll give it a shot."

Likewise, I am going to start practicing listening to local, sensitive rappers. Hey, nice guy, burn me some Atmosphere and Brother Ali – will you?

I don't know if this is going to work.

WEEZER-PORK & BEANS MUSIC VIDEO

Weezer have released one of the greatest videos I've seen in quit some time!! It's for "Pork & Beans," the first single from their new album which is due in stores June 6th. Lollipops, Stress, and Blunts

Kanye West just remixed Lil Wayne's "the song you either love or hate" Lollipop song! He says "tell the girls like doritos that's nachyo cheese!!" Tell us what you think!

Check out the new video "Stress" by Justice! It's directed by Romain Gavras. Very edgy and dark compared to Justices' last couple videos.

In Music/Movie News:
Jonathan Demme (Silence of the Lambs, Philadelphia) has replaced Martin Scorsese as the director of a Bob Marley documentary due to "scheduling conflicts".

According to Reuters, Demme's addition to the project has been welcomed by the Marley family, including executive producer Ziggy Marley.

The film is due to be released in 2010, the 65th anniversary of Marley's birth.

Scorsese recently made the Rolling Stones concert film 'Shine A Light' and also directed the Bob Dylan documentary 'No Direction Home' while Demme shot the recent Neil Young documentary 'Heart of Gold'.

El-P @ Triple Rock 5.16

Here is video from a fan cam!

Dizzie Rascal got the big beat

The story of Dylan Mills is one you have heard many times before. Fatherless childhood, high school expulsions, pizza delivery man stick-ups, an inspirational teacher and enough beef to feed the entire UK. At 18, Dylan Mills, aka Dizzee Rascal, won the Mercury Prize - the highest music honor in the UK- for his debut, Boy In Da Corner, and in an instant became the godfather of Grime. Distancing himself from the techno laced London Garage scene, he created some of the most original hip hop on either side of the ocean. He also was stabbed 5 times, a mere week after his debut.

Since 2003, Dizzee has put out two more albums. His best and most recent, Maths + English, was nominated for another Mercury, and released last month in the US on Def Jux. The album showcases what he does best - infusing his clever, playful, and theatrical lyrics with scrappy, ultra-aggressive yet still danceable samples. Getting help from UK superstars Arctic Monkeys and Lily Allen, Dizzee also showcases his love for the American South with Houston staple UGK. Whether designed to be his crossover album or not, Maths + English provides his American audience with a more familiar sound in a clearly unique package. Buy it if you haven't.

Unfortunately, the catchy hooks and driving aggression that makes his albums so good, didn't translate well at the Triple Rock last Friday. Diz was energetic and polished, but lacked the improvisation and charisma needed for a live hip hop show. It was great fun to see him, but he might as well have pressed play and let his tape player do the work.

Skinny and pimpled Dylan Mills is not yet 23 - with three great records, one big award, not to mention Dirtee Stank, I think he's doing just fine.

Sound Set This Weekend!

With Sound Set coming up this weekend I thought I'd post an Atmosphere video! I saw Slug perform this song acousticly at The Current's Fakebook a few weeks ago, and it was chilling and amazing!! Let us know if you are going to the show. Take lots of picts!

Reflections on a night of pop music - Star Party 2008

I have no words - only videos.

Star Party

AliRose: "Oh my god, can't believe I am at the Myth."
Nick: "Hey, we're at the Myth! For the second time this week! it's hilarious!"
AliRose: "I wanna throw up my free KDWB cheese & crackers"
Nick: "Ok Daria. Adam Levine is doing a great job - next to Danity Kane, he is MIND BLOWING."

Busdriver at Triple Rock 5.16.08

Crass, aggressive and funny - Busdriver held one audience member hostage with his finger gun as he spat quick witty ramblings on subjects not entirely decipherable. The highly anticipated opener provided Minneapolis with a glimpse of true artistry - someone who breathes in his influences and exhales a perspective entirely his own. With two mics, knobs, some switches, and Antimc on guitar and at the helm, the Los Angeles rapper side-swiped the unknowing Minneapolis crowd with his unceasing energy. Plowing through Sunshower and Casting Agents & Cowgirls, his audience reached their peak of excitement when Antimc wove Radiohead's Idioteque into one of his tracks. Towards the end of his set, Busdriver announced that he wanted his musical, ahem, body part, to, you know, with Minneapolis' opposite body part. All I can say, is that myself and hundreds of others emerged satisfied. Thanks Regan.

Sunday, May 18

Dizzee was busy writing

The Def Jux caravan were playing video games and trading off wearing the infamous weight vest, when Nick & I showed up at the Triple Rock at 7 on Friday. We talked with Regan Farquhar, aka Busdriver, first, and then hung out for El-P & Dizzee's sound checks. Diz had blown off our originally scheduled interview, which to be honest, didn't surprise me much, but what was surprising was that he made headliner and label owner, El-P, do his sound check for him. I gotta say, El-P does Dizzee just about as good as Dizzee does Dizzee. Oh well. Guess he was busy writing. Whatever. Jaime Meline, Mr El Producto, talked with us after supper and gave me a kiss on the cheek, making me miss New York and it's kisses quite a bit.

Check out my new favorite song of the moment! It's from the upcoming NERD album "Seeing Sounds" which is due in stores June 10th! Local heartthrob, Eric Fawcett, from Spymob, The Hopefuls, and more plays drums on this hit and most of the album!

MAPLEWOOD UP TO NO GOOD

I will be at Star Party tonight. Yes, that Star Party. Yes, Maroon 5 will be there. Yes, Danity Kane too. Yes, I will be in the VIP section. No, I am not wearing a Tarzan strap and stilettos. No, I will not be singing along. Yes, it will be pure comedy. Yes, yes, yes there will be LOTS of pictures.

Aghast

Leif, I think if you respond to that video, you are closer to losing 25% of your cred points. My ancestors from the old country are weeping. Does her cage fighting boyfriend buy her back any points?

HIPSTER BAIT

Remember how indie queen Liz Phair fashioned a shiv from a pop tart and stabbed the hearts of hipsters 'round the world with her 2003 all-out chart whoring? Well this is the same tale in reverse.

One of the first moppets to be lodged in our craniums by the Swedish hit-berzerker now feels scorned by the big Max, is grown and is releasing a new album targeted at indie/college radio.

Great story, but Robyn lacks any talent/substance, and comes off like a roofied Fergie blowing kisses in the mirror to her disinterested reflection. If you enjoy this video for the reasons intended, subtract %15 of your street cred. Good Day-

MIA TONIGHT!

So I have been pretty excited about the MIA show tonight - even if it cost me $30 and is in Maplewood. What I didn't realize until just now, is that I should have been more excited about her opening act, Egyptian Lover. I am speechless. So fabulous. Here is the video for Freak-A-Holic.

Nick's Single of the Week

Got the case of the Monday's? Need a little kick in the ass from the rough weekend at nanna’s tea party? Here is my Single of the Week for you to crank at your desk/cube/wi-fi hot spot.

The band is called The Heavy. They're from the U.K. The song is called Coleen. They sound like if Gnarls Barkley scored the music to a bad 70's porno starring Richard Roundtree. Enjoy!

I took the night off & missed a good show

I decided to take the night off last night - too many nights out in a row. Getting old. Anyway, I guess I missed a great show and my chance to take tequila shots with Jamie & Alison. Thankfully, recently released (hospital not jail) Leif, sent his friends who forgot to take pictures but came back with the set list - in case you were dying to know what they played:

URA Fever
Pull a U
Sour Cherry
Tape Song
No Wow
Alphabet Pony
Wait
Last Day of Magic
Kissy Kissy
What New York Used to Be
Cheap and Cheerful
Fried My Little Brains
Goodnight Bad Morning

Encore:
Love Is a Deserter
Drop Out

Letter to AliRose

I was very pleased to open my email this morning and find this email from a guy we will call "Inappropriate Hugger." Thank you, IH, for your DeVotchKa post. Keep em coming!

Hey –

I know there was a request to send thoughts about the show to My Music at Fox, but since I haven't hugged Fox yet I don't feel comfortable sharing my feelings with it/him/her. Anyways, I did get to the show early because I like being close, but not too close. Strangely that is the same approach I have with women... Anyways, the first act doesn't need commenting, they won a contest which is nice for them, not so nice for me. Second act, Basia, well she was adorable, has decent strange presence and was adorable. Did I say she was adorable? Well, musically the last song or two where the energy was picked up was considerably better than the direction the set was going. Maybe I need to listen to her stuff some more, but she was not nearly as good as My Brightest Diamond (last time's opening act). Before getting to the main act some crowd observations, I saw a lot of couples... I mean A LOT. Next down I would say packs of wild girls or gyrls or grls, usually in packs of 4. Not sure what the significance of that was... And finally, my group, sad looking single guys, looking for a taste of happiness or more sadness in strings and accordion music. I must say for a portion of the main act I felt like I was at the State Fair playing "Whack a Mole". Except in this case it was "Whack a Pot Head Hippy Gyrl." You see there were four ladies in front of me that would scrunch do to take a hit of a joint and pass it to the next who would in turn do the same thing. Not sure if they thought that was more discreet or not. The show itself did not feel as energetic as the last two I have been two. I don't know if it was the new tuba sans Christmas lights or something else. I will admit that I do love "Queen of the Surface Streets" and "How It Ends" and am not apologetic for that. I have most of their releases with the exception of the soundtrack and I enjoy it all, but there is something about those songs. As for the Slavic Sisters, that is what it is. Anyways, I hope you had a good time at the show. I did not seek you out for fear of another hugging episode. I know you sought treatment, but it could make for an uncomfortable situation for those attending the show with you.

Tell your mother you love her,
Inappropriate hugger.

Nick's Monday Morning Music Musings!

Peep the new Gnarls Barkley video "Going On" from their new album The Odd Couple. If you haven't bought this album yet, your life is not complete.

Go get the new Black Keys album Attack & Release as well. It is produced by Danger Mouse! It's awesomeness will bring a tear to your eye.

Speaking of tears, I literally cried my eyes out this weekend! I took my Mom and Grandma to the beautiful documentary Young @ Heart for mother's day. I haven't cried this hard since Free Willy! The movie is about a chorus of senior citizens from Massachusetts who cover songs by Jimi Hendrix, Coldplay, Sonic Youth, and more. Check out the trailer.

Here's a hilarious music video that they did for The Ramones "I Want to be Sedated"

Dr. G goes to DeVotchKa

Crowd Breakdown

  • Dirty Hippies: 60% Who needs drugs when you can hear an accordion!
  • Lesbians: 30% Ladies, just because you bought the band’s t-shirt, doesn’t mean you have to put it on directly
  • Moms in Clogs: 5% Holla!
  • Band and Entourage: 4%
  • Swingers: 1% A small but visible minority (P.S. Seriously? Must all of you make out with all of you directly in front of me?)

Miscellaneous Data

  • Aroma: A Light Roast of Patchouli and Body Odor
  • Dance Move: Tie! The evening’s most popular move was split between Shark-Attack-Victim-Trying-to-Keep-Afloat (think no-armed rocking) with Asian-Styled Female Wrist/Hand Movement (see image)

What Gets this Crowd Off

  1. Ladies who play big horns
  2. The word “Minneapolis
  3. Songs they’ve already heard. Either on the Current or in their Slovak dreams.

Hypothetical Audience Situation

If the boy audience members were pitted against the girl audience members in an all-out bar brawl, who would win?
Good question. Initially I would say the women could take the fight without losing a single headscarf. However, after further audience investigation, I would have to say that the fight would come down to whichever sex could keep their artsy glasses on long enough to see their opponent.

Community Ed Class Recommendation

If you wanted to make a splash at future DeVotchKa shows, may I recommend taking “Belly-Dancing Your Way to Spiritual and Physical Fitness.” Southwest High School Gym, M-W, evenings.

Introducing Dr. G

There are plenty of people who can tell you about how the “music” of the show was - I am not one of them. But if you have ever asked yourself the following questions, please consider me your MMTC contributer:

  1. Could I meet like-minded people by going to see this band?
  2. If I wear a specific outfit will I get laid at this band’s show?
  3. If the music sucks, will the audience mock-factor be worth the price of admission?

I am a purveyor of people, anthropologist of audiences, critic of the crowd. Stay tuned for my posts as they pertain NOT to the music, but to the fashion, social, and intellectual choices of the audience. First stop? DeVotchKa. I bet you can't wait...

Tommy oh Tommy

Man - Just heard Long Way Home again on the radio - what a song! I had the pleasure of meeting Tom Waits when I worked in college admissions at my Alma Mater in Oakland, CA. He came down with his daughter from Santa Rosa, in an effort to have her transfer from an area Jr College. He was wearing black jeans, motorcycle boots, a white short sleeved collared shirt with the sleeves rolled up and was, as one can imagine, just amazing looking. All three of us in the office dressed special for Tom Waits day, and stood in a line outside our building as he toured campus. He spent an extra long time in our glass & metals department, carefully watching the students blow glass and cast sculptures. It was a thrill. In the end, his daughter decided to stay in Santa Rosa, and he lamented as they left how much he wished he could be a student. Sigh.

I love YouTube. Here is a great video of Downtown Train:

He ain't born typical

Leif hopes to be un-institutionalized by Sunday night. He has been doing the jumbles in the paper to pass the time.

Thursday, May 8

Two nights in a row on the corner of 7th & 1st

I have hives and Leif is in traction - therefore you will have to wait for anything professional. In the meanwhile voila:

DeVotchKa was really interesting last night at First Ave's Mainroom. While I have felt and to some extent still feel lukewarm about the driving orchestral Slavic sound of the Colorado band, there is no arguing their musical place in the world. If Trotsky and Kahlo gave birth to Johnny Mathis, I imagine he would have sounded much like frontman Nick Urata. Tom Hagerman was just brilliant on the violin, toy piano and accordian and everybody loves an aerialist - especially when they are two sisters suspended from the ceiling above the sold out Mainroom. DeVotchKa are certainly NOT Beirut for your uncle, but perhaps a western Gogol Bordello on a morphine drip - a big, driving force of music that instead of slapping you in the face, lives inside your chest, glowing and growing - like the first time you heard Arcade Fire.

Weekday Update

Leif's got Dirtbombs in his head, broken bones in his body - aka 'Cred St. Blues'. Stay tuned for an audio review of last Saturday's Dirtbombs show at the 7th St Entry straight from his hospital bedside. He was in a not so fun car accident on Sat night after bassist for the Dirtbombs, Ko Melina, planted one firmly on his cheek.

Aside from the various breaks and scrapes, he is doing well and still spinning from his dream come true.

I will be at Devotchka tonight at First Ave with some friends from out of town... Send me your thoughts about the show tomorrow mmtc@foxtv.com.

Felicidades

I nearly forgot to make a Cinco de Mayo themed post today!!! So, with 58 mins until the 6th, here it is: Sam Houston High School's 1995 Cinco de Mayo band.

Trick Daddy ain't wearing Bugle Boy Jeans

Nick made me a mix today and included one of my favorite songs of 2000. If I were a Southern Rapper, I definitely would be in a video dressed as a showgirl rapping in a convertible.. We all gotta have a dream....

Confessions of a Concert-going Newbie

MMTC friend Vanessa Walrath wandered into the Walker Art Center Sat night and emerged with this to say:

I spent the majority of my life with only corn fields and the occasional 24-hr grocery store for entertainment. Needless to say, the Twin Cities has broadened my horizons. But three years after moving here, I’m still new at this, still the last one to hear about a great new band or the next life-changing show. So if I blindly wander into a venue at which anything phenomenal is happening, it’s sheer luck.

Well, luck struck again on Saturday night, when I found an extra ticket to the sold-out 8pmWorld of Dosh at the Walker (I only specify time because, even though I thought about sliding under a seat so I could catch the 11pm show, I didn’t). Words do little justice to the experience.

For starters, I have this secret love of experimental/ambient/electronica/hip hop and a not so secret love of jazz, so if a band edges toward that end of the spectrum, I’m happy. Euphoria = Dosh and his friends. I felt like a fly on the wall in a practice space jam session – only the most beautiful, intricate, and skillful jam session I’ve ever witnessed. Each of Dosh’s “friends” held their own, and almost played in a world unto themselves - looping sounds from guitar strings, bass, percussion, baby Yamaha keyboards, etc. as Dosh manned his “rig” of keyboard, Fender Rhodes, grand piano, drum kit and a ridiculous amount of pedals and cables. They passed the melody around with ease, sometimes adding a single note or sound to create a perfect whole.

Dosh’s personal simplicity and humility (his only opening line: “Hi, everybody”) was in direct contrast to the complexity of his sound, layering beats, random sounds, chord progressions to such fullness that when his “friends” stepped back and he played 5+ min. on his own, nothing was missing. However, the final numbers, that included Andrew Bird on violin and whistle + 6 friends +Dosh were a modern symphony that left the audience on its feet (and me wishing I could fit into the garbage can and sneak into the next show).

The only thing I regretted about the experience was that I picked the 8pm performance. I felt like, in spite of the slightly unstructured nature of the music, everyone was very time-conscious, and the encore was cut-short b/c they had to get us out of there in time for the 11pm audience. But being the rule-conscious Midwesterner that I am, I respectfully filed out of the room with everyone else, thankful that Fate had once again smiled on me and allowed me to happen upon that show…

Video: Andrew Bird and Dosh May 3, 2008.

Letter to a friend

Dear Scarlett,

Yes, I was annoyed when your South High boyfriend was hotter than mine. I am usually irritated when people talk about your chest as if no other woman in the history of the world had boobs as big as yours. Maybe a little bit jealous that you got to hang out with Bill Murray for months in Japan. And yes, I may have been big time annoyed when you had drinks with my ex-boyfriend last weekend in Manhattan. But I am a nice person, one who forgives and forgets. But let's get something straight - I draw the line with David Bowie.

As I was driving home after a late Friday night dinner, I heard Falling Down on the radio. I know, I know, people have been talking about your upcoming release for a while now- blah blah blah Tom Waits blah blah Yeah Yeah Yeahs, blah blah blah TV on the Radio. However you roped these suckers in to your evil musical plans, I do not know. But David Bowie? DAVID BOWIE? What's next on your list? A duet with Stevie Nicks? Cypher with Lil Wayne? 1965 Newport Folk Festival Reunion Tour starring you as Cate Blanchett as Bob Dylan where you reenact his going electric? Yeah, that's totally it.

Scarlett, dear Scarlett, please stop being so competitive with me. I guarantee once you stop stealing everything I like, you will find your own path of self realization. If you wish, I will send you a list of things I dislike, you know, to get you started.

Besos,
AliRose

ps - tell Tom I don't think he is a sucker.

Saturday night don't stop won't stop

Detroilet is a criminal’s playground that not even Snake Plissken would monkey bar into, it is known for little else – which has spawned the TV show with the most street cred reality history. But the Dirty D also spawned a garage rock scene around the turn of the century that shall not soon be forgotten. The backbone of that scene belongs to none other than Mick Collins, frontman of the Dirtbombs, Gories, Blacktop, Voltaire Bros., etc.

While Jack White gets the name and acclaim, Mick wears the stains of a gritty, no frills mojo that built your favorite rock ‘n roll flop house on top of pissy, crack-viled sidewalks. I’m interviewing Mick before his D-Bombs hit the entry stage Saturday -- boozy, raw video to come. The Fuzz Master a lot to say and you’ve got a lot to learn, so stay tuned scenesters-in-training.

Here’s to hoping I can get his bad-assed white-hot bassist Ko Melina to kiss me on the cheek.

Galangalangalang

Yes ladies, soon you can get your own MIA outfit to wear to her upcoming show at the Myth on Tuesday the 13th. She is exclusively wearing her own clothes, and as described to WWD: “With my stuff, because everything’s really bright, if you lose it or someone steals it, you can see it from miles away and you can be like, ‘Oy! Give me my shirt back!’”

Speaking of Kurtis Blow, here is what he has been up to... Clip from last year's European Tour.

Jus' a Rascal

I was in London a little over a year ago and went to a grime show at the ICA (pictured) with my boyfriend at the time. I thought it was ok - I have a hard time standing around watching a DJ DJ, but he was over the moon and for the next few months, pretended to be the hype man for After Shock Productions and would spontaneously yell, SHOCK TO THE SYSTEM! That same week, we saw Kurtis Blow , of all people, play, and went to a hip-hop club where we were the only ones that new all of the words to Ms. New Bootie. Anyway, however much I couldn't get into the London underground, I can get behind Dizzee Rascal, who has made three fantastic albums and will be coming to The Triple Rock on the 16th. Look forward to MMTC doing a little somethin somethin with him - anyone know where I can get an airbrushed t-shirt of myself to wear to the interview?
